The Durham Bulls

Overview
The Durham Bulls have enjoyed a long history in Durham, NC. Made internationally famous by the Kevin Costner-Susan Sarandon flick Bull Durham, the minor league team is currently the Triple-A affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.

The Bulls have set several records for attendance and are widely known for being an affordable family-friendly venue. Mascot Wool E. Bull not only entertains the crowd but works hard to support education, along with the Bulls’ many other community projects.

History
Bulls Manager Bill EversFirst known as the Durham Tobacconists, the team formed in 1902 when the North Carolina League was created. Judge William Gibbons Bramham owned the original team. After a long history, Capitol Broadcasting Company President & CEO Jim Goodmon came on the scene to buy the Bulls in 1990. Later that year the Bulls broke an attendance record with a crowd of 6,202 on August 30th, pushing the Bulls attendance to 300,499, making them the first ever Class A Team to ever pass the 300,000 mark.

Goodmon built a new home for the Bulls on Blackwell Street, adjacent to the Durham Freeway, which opened for the 1995 season. Then in 1998, the ballpark underwent expansion to meet criteria for the Bulls to move up to Triple-A. Previously associated with the Atlanta Braves when Single-A, the Bulls became an affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays.

In 2002, the Bulls played an exhibition game with the Tampa Bay Rays on March 30th, the first game in team history to be broadcast in High-Definition on local television. Later that year on April 8th, Bulls Manager Bill Evers became the all-time winningest manager with 320 wins. Then in September the Bulls claimed their first International League Championship and first title of any kind in 33 years. They took the same title a year later, becoming the only team in the 119-year history of the International League to sweep back-to-back Governors’ Cup Finals.
