Kids VotingKids Voting

Kids Voting is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization aimed at educating kindergarten through 12th-grade private and public school students about the electoral process. This grassroots organization is dedicated to educating America's youth about the importance of an informed election and about the responsibilities of voting to sustain democracy. They also hope to increase the number of adults at the polls because the children will often pressure their parents to join them at the ballot box.

After hearing about the Mecklenburg County Kids Voting program, Jim Goodmon, President and CEO of Capitol Broadcasting, convened a task force of civic and business leaders to bring Kids Voting to Wake County. With the help of the Junior League, a task force was formed that initiated several community gatherings, hosted by CBC. The Board of Directors was created, comprised of 40 representatives of the public school system, the Wake County PTA, the League of Women Voters, the Board of Elections, corporate supporters, educational organizations, and colleges and universities.

CBC provided the leadership gift and worked with other members to recruit volunteers and raise funds for the program. In 1998, Jim Goodmon received the national Jim Batten Media Leadership Award in recognition of his coordination of the start of the program, volunteer recruitment and fund-raising efforts; Kids Voting NC/Wake County received the national Community Spirit Award for working cooperatively with the schools and the community.
