Coastal Federal
Field hosted some of the best talent in the Major Leagues on Thursday,
September 20, as Major League players from the last four decades
took on local celebrities in a seven-inning exhibition game. The
Sprint PCS Legends of Baseball game offered beach locals and tourists
alike an opportunity to reflect on the events of the previous two
weeks and a reprieve to laugh for a little while.
The teams, dubbed
the Palmettos and the Coasters, ended up tied 5-5. Baseball notables
such as Vida Blue, George Foster and Andy Van Slyke took on the
likes of Pelican Manager Brian Snitker and other local media, business
and political leaders. The night's activities centered on entertainment
from the playing time to the between innings shenanigans.
As a highlight
of the evening former Pelican Rafael Furcal had his #2 jersey retired.
2000 National League Rookie of the Year and current Atlanta Braves
shortstop, Furcal helped lead the Pelicans to the Carolina League's
Mills Cup Championship in 1999. "It's good to be here," said Furcal.
"I want to thank everybody who came to watch us play."
