The Myrtle Beach Pelicans
traded baseball bats for golf clubs on Monday, May 21, for the 2nd Annual
Banana Boat/NextMedia Charity Golf Tournament. Held at The Grande Dunes
Golf Club in Myrtle Beach he tournament benefited the Pelicans
Youth Diamond Fund.

Golfers paid
$95 each to play, and each team had its own celebrity. Current Pelicans
players and coaches as well as Atlanta Braves and Cleveland Indians
personnel rounded out the teams.
The winning
group came in at 14 under par. Mickey Phillips, Craig Greenberg,
Mike Lach, Lum Reed and celebrity Franklin Stubbs, former Major
League player and current hitting instructor in the Braves organization,
each received a trip for two to the destination of their choice
and a limited edition Agussi watch. Two teams drew for second place;
each finished two shots back from the leaders.
The event included
competitions for the longest drive and closest to the pin as well
as a raffle. Raffle prizes included sets of golf clubs, complimentary
golf at courses

such as The
Grande Dunes and Myrtlewood, CD box sets of The Doors, Led Zepplin
and the Eagles, to name a few.
The Pelicans
set up the Youth Diamond Fund as a way to thank Horry County and
the city of Myrtle Beach for contributing the majority of the necessary
funds to build the Pelicans' home, Coastal Federal Field. Through
the Fund the Pelicans raise money through team events and fundraising
activities to provide funding for athletic equipment, sports-related
training for coaches and sports-related programs for children. The
Fund's Board of Directors selects one major project each season
to receive the proceeds from the Youth Diamond Fund.
