CBC Receives Platinum Award

Last Thursday, September 15, Capitol Broadcasting Company received a Platinum Rule Award from the Triangle Business Journal (TBJ) at an event at the N. C. Museum of History in downtown Raleigh. CBC won the award for Work Environment in the large company division.

The 2nd Annual Platinum Award for Workplace Environment was aimed at “capturing both unusual physical work environments and the spirit of the workplace. The focus is on what makes certain offices fun, energizing and comfortable in the sense of employees being at ease with each other and their supervisors.” CBC was selected because of our dedication to community service, good company benefits, and dedication to beautifying the community.

WNCN-17 prepared the presentation videos for the awards event. WRAL-TV Chief Engineer Craig Turner, News Director Andrea Parquet-Taylor, and CBC Human Resources Director Jan Sharp were featured in interviews praising CBC’s worker-friendly setting. CBC also made an impression on the judges with our annual giveaways of turkeys at Thanksgiving, lilies at Easter, poinsettias at Christmas and carnations for Mother’s Day. The TBJ was impressed that our “company’s philosophy is that encouraging community-based activities improves the quality of life for everyone involved.”

Fifteen companies received Platinum awards.

The awards were created to honor companies who are truly distinctive in the their way of dealing with the changing workplace and are based on the Platinum Rule: “do unto others as they would like done unto them.” A panel of community leaders including BTI’s Steve Toler, Wachovia’s Jane Mitchell, and NCEITA’s Joe Meirs judged the nominations and selected the 2000 recipients.

State Board of Education Chairman Phil Kirk gave the keynote address.	Awards were given for Culture, Work Environment, Family Friendly, People Development and Rewards & Recognition. Three awards were given in each category: one for small businesses (50 employees and under), mid-sized businesses (50-250 employees), and large businesses (250+ employees). Forty-seven companies entered 140 separate nominations in the five Platinum Award categories, but only 15 walked home with the marble plaques. CP&L was the evening’s only double winner with awards for Family Friendly and People Development. Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, one of CBC’s health insurance providers, walked home with the Crown Award, a special award for one company that exhibited excellence in all five award categories. State Board of Education Chairman Phil Kirk served as the keynote speaker for the evening. After being introduced as a “genuine public servant” by Maupin Taylor & Ellis’ Travis Porter, Kirk told a few funny tales about his experiences in North Carolina’s public schools. He commended the award winners on “saluting businesses for being worker friendly” saying that loyalty is a trait that should go both ways. WNCN-17 News Anchor Donna Gregory emceed the event, and Phil Kirk handed out the plaques along with TBJ publisher Charlene Grunwaldt. Jan Sharp accepted the award on behalf of CBC. CBC was winner in the Culture category last year, the first annual presentation.
